This has caused many third-party customization software makers to discontinue their products as no longer viable. This is very ineffectual as a security measure, but effective indeed for taking macs one step closer to being a complete black box even to their owners, much as iphones are.

The new rootless/SIP architecture means that it is difficult or impossible for users to make changes to their own systems.

So if you do want autocomplete suggestions when you're searching for something, but do not want to send Google every single keystroke when you're just going to something in your history or bookmarks, again, too bad. Safari used to have discrete address and search fields.

If you just wanted to see the actual contents of a piece of mail, not the froofy htmlized version that probably doesn't work anyway unless you load external images (which is a security and privacy risk), too bad. When Spaces was mushed into Mission Control, it lost tons of functionality, such as the ability to drag all windows from an application to a different desktop.īafflingly, Mail.app in 10.9 removed the ability to display plaintext versions of email. When Exposé was mushed into Mission Control, it lost its very most fundamental feature: the ability to use the full display to show shrunken versions of all windows on the current desktop. But some of them are unfortunately irreversible, and represent big losses of functionality. Some of these UX changes (like reversed and disappearing scrollbars) can at least be undone in preferences. So if you don't use your machine in this newly-envisioned way-as an accessory to your phone-then most of the changes have been at best useless, and at worst detrimental. Starting with 10.7, most of the changes to OSX have been to make it look more like, behave more like, and integrate more with iphones. The big change was the release and incredible success of the iphone.
